Number eleven in my personal collection: Shohei Ohtani on the 1983 Topps design, card #83-1 from 2018 Topps 1983 Topps Baseball Rookies, graded a 9 Mint by TAG.
The card
Topps celebrated the 35th anniversary of its 1983 set by putting 2018's rookies on that classic design, and Ohtani got card #1. It has everything people remember about '83: the action photo with the colored frame, the little round headshot in the bottom corner, and the team name in a bar along the bottom. Ohtani is swinging in the white Angels home uniform, with PITCHER/DESIGNATED HITTER under his name and a 35th anniversary stamp up top.
Why it matters
It's a rookie-year Ohtani with the RC logo, on one of the best-loved designs Topps ever made, and it's card #1 of the set. Graded copies sell for more than most of my other Ohtanis.
The grade
TAG grades with computer imaging and posts a full report for every card, with close-ups of the corners, edges and surface. This one came back a 9 Mint, with no flaws flagged on the corners, edges or surface; it lost its points on centering. As of October 2026 TAG has graded eight of this card, six got a 9, and mine is tied for the 2nd highest score among them. You can see the whole report at my.taggrading.com.
