This one stays in my personal collection. It's a 2017 Panini Contenders Rookie of the Year Contenders insert of Patrick Mahomes II, card #RY-3, graded Mint Plus 9.5 by CSG.
The card
Contenders is Panini's football set built around the rookie class, and the Rookie of the Year Contenders insert picks out the rookies Panini thought had a shot at the award. Mahomes is on the front in the red #15 with the ball cocked back, set against a gold stadium background with KANSAS CITY CHIEFS across the top. The bottom has the Rookie of the Year Contenders banner, QB, the Contenders logo and the Chiefs arrowhead. The back runs a gold-toned photo of him throwing next to the arrowhead, his name, #15 and Quarterback.
Why it matters
It's from his rookie year. The Chiefs traded up to take him 10th overall in the 2017 draft, and he spent most of that season behind Alex Smith. He got one start, the last game of the regular season. Nobody holding this card in 2017 knew what was coming: an MVP in his first year as the starter and Super Bowl rings after the 2019, 2022 and 2023 seasons. A card that literally calls him a Rookie of the Year contender before any of that happened is a fun piece of history to own.
It's a rookie-year insert, not his Contenders Rookie Ticket autograph, but it's from the same 2017 set and the same rookie class.
The grade
CSG graded it a 9.5 Mint Plus, one step below their top grades. Anyone can look up the cert number on the label at CSGcards.com/verify.
Photos are my own shots of the slab, cleaned up for the site.
