Number six in my personal collection, and another true rookie card: Rob Gronkowski, card #84 from 2010 Donruss, with the Rated Rookie logo, graded a 9 Mint by PSA.
The card
The Rated Rookie logo is one of the most recognized rookie stamps in the hobby. Donruss has been putting it on its top rookies since the 1980s. Gronk is on the front in the Patriots navy #87, ball tucked in his arm, with the Rated Rookie logo in the top corner and TIGHT END across the bottom. The back has his last season at Arizona (47 catches, 672 yards, 10 touchdowns) and a fun note: he was the first of three Gronkowski brothers in the NFL to score, with his only catch in the season-opening win over Cincinnati going for a one-yard touchdown a week before brother Chris scored for Dallas.
Why it matters
The Patriots took Gronk in the second round of the 2010 draft, and he turned into one of the best tight ends ever to play. In 2011 he set the single-season records for a tight end in receiving yards and touchdowns, and he won four Super Bowls, three with New England and one more with Tampa Bay. This card is him at the very start of all that.
The grade
PSA graded it a 9 Mint, and the cert number is on the label, so anyone can look it up at PSAcard.com.
Photos are my own shots of the slab, cleaned up for the site.
