Number five in my personal collection, and the oldest card of the bunch: Aaron Rodgers, card #16 from the 2005 Upper Deck NFL Players Rookie Premiere set, graded a 9 Mint by PSA.
The card
Rookie Premiere comes from the photo shoot the NFL Players Association holds for each year's rookie class, so the pictures are from before they ever played a snap. Rodgers is on the front in a red #12 practice jersey and gold Packers shorts, ball cocked back, with a black-and-white film strip of his throwing motion running down the side. The back has his two seasons at Cal (5,469 yards, 43 touchdowns, 13 interceptions) and a line that aged pretty well: taken 24th overall, Rodgers "was a steal for the Packers as they have their heir apparent to the talented Brett Favre."
Why it matters
Rodgers famously slid on draft day in 2005 and waited until the 24th pick, then sat three years behind Favre. When he finally got the job, he turned into one of the best quarterbacks ever: a Super Bowl XLV win and Super Bowl MVP, and four league MVP awards. This card catches him right at the start, a rookie in a practice jersey with all of that still ahead of him.
The grade
PSA is the biggest name in card grading, and this one came back a 9 Mint. The cert number is on the label, so anyone can look it up at PSAcard.com.
Photos are my own shots of the slab, cleaned up for the site.
