Another one from my personal collection: Connor McDavid before he was an NHL player. This is card #01 from 2015 In The Game CHL Draft, the pink parallel, serial numbered 121 of 200, graded a 9 Mint by TAG.
The card
The front has McDavid in his Erie Otters jersey with the captain's C, skating up ice with his stick down, framed by pink angled borders. The serial number is stamped in the top right corner. The back is card #01, the first card in the set, with a smaller photo, the Otters logo and a short bio. It says that at 16 he played for Canada at the U18 tournament in Sochi in 2013, scoring the game-winner in a 3-point debut against Slovakia, and calls him the expected first pick of the 2015 draft and the previous season's OHL Rookie of the Year.
Why it matters
In The Game made this set for the 2015 draft class while McDavid was still in junior hockey, so it's a card of him before the Edmonton Oilers took him first overall that June. It isn't an official NHL rookie card, since the set is licensed by the Canadian Hockey League, not the NHL. That's what makes it fun: it's McDavid as the can't-miss kid everybody knew was going first, before the Hart Trophies, the scoring titles and the 2024 Conn Smythe.
The pink parallel is limited to 200 copies, so it's a lot harder to find than the base version of the card.
The grade
TAG grades with computer imaging and gives every card a score out of 1,000 along with the 1–10 grade. This one is a 9 Mint with a score of 936. The centering is almost dead-on, 50/50 left to right and 49/51 top to bottom on the front, and all four corners came back clean. As of October 2026, TAG has graded only two copies of this pink parallel, and mine is the only one that got a 9, making it the highest-graded copy. The photos here come straight from TAG's report, and you can see the whole thing at my.taggrading.com.
